SCOTT GORHAM Talks Next BLACK STAR RIDERS Album

November 5, 2013

During a brand new interview with The Rocktologist, BLACK STAR RIDERS and THIN LIZZY guitarist Scott Gorham was asked when fans can expect to hear the sophomore BLACK STAR RIDERS album.

"If we'll be doing another one, it will be next September," he said. "There were 12 songs on [this year's] 'All Hell Breaks Loose', but we actually had 18 songs written in total. Some of them didn't feel quite right while the others weren't quite finished. So those numbers that were left out could easily be included the next time around. We'll need to review the situation when we get to the next album. And the band is constantly writing new material, so it's not like we're sitting around doing nothing. It's all pretty exciting stuff."

Regarding whether the next BLACK STAR RIDERS CD will make a departure from the classic THIN LIZZY sound that was present on "All Hell Breaks Loose", Gorham said: "Well, as I already said, these sounds come out the way they come out. There's not sort of premeditation on how we record or anything like that. It's just that this time it happened to be more of THIN LIZZY. I've been playing LIZZY music all my life, so I'm going to drag that with me everywhere I go. It's an interesting question, though, and I guess well have to wait and see in which direction the sound will evolve in future. This pretty much grabs my interest too."

Gorham also denied that "All Hell Breaks Loose" was made with the specific goal in mind of trying to please THIN LIZZY fans. "I think what happened in the beginning is that first we were contemplating 'All Hell Breaks Loose' as a next THIN LIZZY album. And there were three songs that got written with that construction in mind. Later we changed our mind on that, so that kind of freed us up to be able to give a whole new slant on songs and write them in a different way. That's what basically happened, and there rests the reason why you hear so much of LIZZY in it. But, you know, at the same time you must realize that I've been playing THIN LIZZY songs my whole life, so there's always going to be a bit of that wherever I go. And both Damon [Johnson, guitar] and Ricky [Warwick, guitar/vocals] have been studying the whole THIN LIZZY thing for the last three years, so it's kind of tough just to shake all those things off all of a sudden."
